WinPointer, courtesy of Lucy Kuhns

Many of you know my good friend and fellow Autodesker, Lucy Kuhns. Lucy is indeed the high priestess of all things Civil here at Autodesk. If you have seen Lucy present, you may be wondering about the utility she uses to highlight items in Civil 3D.

It's called WinPointer and it's almost free. Download WinPointer

Thanks Lucy!

Got a cool tip?  Then send it to me!  If I post it to The Dirt, I'll send you something cool.

Rox v. Sox

I just have one thing to say:  It's a good time to be from New England!

If both teams go down in flames this weekend, I'll know it was because of this post—and I'll never make another sports-related post again. I have offered to teach both teams Civil 3D, so they can model the drive to work, the playing fields, and what will happen to the fields when it rains . . .

No response from either team yet—but I remain hopeful.

Return to Rapa Nui

Greetings from Chile! I am writing this as I sit in the Santiago airport waiting to board my plane for home.  Some of you have e-mailed asking me where I’ve been hiding, only to be met with a response from Outlook saying that I’ll be out of the US with limited access to e-mail and voice mail.

I left home on Monday, September 24th for an internal company event I hosted in Dallas. Three days later, I boarded a plane to return to Rapa Nui, a.k.a Easter Island.  While I can’t say much now about the three weeks I spent on the island, I can tell you that you will be hearing a lot more about my trip in the coming months.

Overlook on Rapa Nui

This trip sets a new record for me. I will have been away from home for 26 straight days, almost four weeks. It is sure going to be nice to sleep in my own bed again!  All weekend, I’ll be doing laundry, catching up on my e-mail, and watching the Red Sox.

Iorana (thank you) to my dear friends Sonia, Sebastian, Tahira, Melinca and Geraldine in Rapa Nui!

Uploading Description Keys and Figure Prefixes to Trimble Data Collectors

If you use Trimble data collectors, try this method of uploading your description keys and figure prefixes directly to your data collectors. This is a great way to get surveyors to follow field coding standards.

Draping an Image over a Terrain Model

Here is one of the coolest new features in Civil 3D 2008.  I use Google Earth to bring in an image, then I drape it over the terrain model with Civil 3D.
